Slip casting and press molding are processes which enable you to replicate – with incredible precision – the same objects over and over. Many everyday industrially produced objects are made using slip casting: toilets, hobby ceramics, and dinnerware are some examples.<br /><br />You will use existing molds in the studio. There are ‘gang molds’ and single piece molds to use for this project. A gang mold is a mold which enables you to cast several pieces at one time. This works particularly well for replicating large numbers of small pieces. Instead of creating your own object to make a mold of, you will use existing molds and utilize the chosen mold in it’s complete form or modify the molded object.<br /><br />THEREFORE you should think long and hard about the mold/object that you want to use. How does the object you choose contribute to the meaning of your sculpture? It CANNOT be irrelevant.<br /><br />Think broadly about your piece. Installation, wall pieces, vessel forms, are acceptable. However all ideas must be well thought out and conceptually sound.<br /><br />PARAMETERS:<br />+ You must use a two piece mold.<br />+ You must cast many pieces from your mold.<br />+ You must make a larger sculpture out of the modules that you create<br />+ You may need to handbuild portions of the work to complete your idea.<br />+ The size of the project is variable but must be commensurate with the time allotted for the assignment. It’s a good idea to discuss your project with Missy before getting dead set on your final decision.<br />+Mixed media can be used for up to 20%-25% of this piece.<br />+ It is strongly suggested for you to purchase a sealable box which we will fill partially up with plaster. You are going to have to spend a little time in the library researching the history of ceramics. During your research find work that engages you and make photocopies of the chosen objects and learn about how, where, why and by whom they were made. Make sketches of the forms and think about the sculptural or utilitarian function.<br /><br />The second part of this assignment is to reinterpret the historical work so that it becomes a contemporary piece. While you are selecting and sketching your chosen piece, brainstorm on different ways to bring it into contemporary times. Bring this ancient object into the present by using contemporary/ current iconography and/ or contemporary/ current issues. Look around you for inspiration. There are so many things that will indicate to a viewer that this new object is a part of the twenty-first century. Make your object so that it has a real or imagined use for today. You may change the form of the piece, alter its surface or make additional attachments to the piece. At least 3 must be from a book!<br /><br />*Sketching your ideas on transforming the work more contemporary-<br />- Start with 3-5 different historical pieces.<br />- Sketch each one with 3 different ideas.<br />- Each idea should be explored at least 3 different ways.<br />- This is a total of at least 27 sketches that will be due.
